Troubleshooting#
A VM size is restricted, or the size list is short#
Some subscriptions (Visual Studio and trial subscriptions especially) can't use some sizes in some regions. Restricted sizes are greyed out on the Desktops page with "not available to this subscription here", and Review offers available sizes with the same vCPUs. Pick one, or another region.
If you need a particular size, ask Microsoft for access or more quota from Quotas in the Azure portal.
Not enough vCPU quota#
Review compares the vCPUs the design needs with what's free in the region. Lower the users at peak or the host size, pick another region, or raise the quota in the Azure portal.
Leftover devices#
Review warns about Entra devices named like the new session hosts (for example AVDSH-0) with no VM behind them, usually left by an earlier deployment. Delete them in Entra ID and Intune before deploying, or use another prefix. Otherwise the new hosts get duplicate device records and Intune may apply the wrong policies.
"This page is out of date"#
AVD Deploy has been updated since the tab was opened. Reload the page (Ctrl+F5 or Cmd+Shift+R). Your design is kept.
Session hosts don't register#
Registration waits up to 15 minutes. If hosts don't appear:
- check the network can reach the internet (the new network uses a NAT gateway; an existing one needs outbound access for AVD);
- check custom DNS resolves public names;
- open the VM in the Azure portal and look at its extensions.
Deploying the same design again only creates what's missing.
Profiles don't load (FSLogix)#
- Run Finish setup again: it only changes what's missing.
- Check the storage app is excluded from Conditional Access policies that require MFA for all resources.
- Check DNS on the session hosts resolves the storage account to its private endpoint.
- Cloud-only FSLogix needs a supported Windows build; the host check reports any that aren't.
The Intune device group wasn't created#
Dynamic groups need Entra ID P1, and Groups Administrator or User Administrator. Create it yourself with the rule shown on the Access page.
