Quick start: Notepad++#

From download to Company Portal in about ten minutes. Use a test PC or virtual machine for step 2's local test.

  1. Download AKC-AppDeploy.exe and run it. Windows SmartScreen may warn the first time: choose More info, Run anyway.
  2. Set up your tenant once, as a Cloud Application Administrator: Tools, Set up this tenant. See Before you start.
  3. Sign in (top right) with your Application Manager account.
  4. Step 1, Package: download the Notepad++ x64 installer from notepad-plus-plus.org and drop it on the window. Choose Build the package. AppDeploy builds the .intunewin and checks it.
  5. Step 2, Install: AppDeploy recognises NSIS (Nullsoft) with high confidence and fills in npp.<version>.Installer.x64.exe /S, with the uninstall command guessed from the installer's product name: "%ProgramFiles%\Notepad++\uninstall.exe" /S.

    Choose Test the install, approve Windows' administrator prompt, and wait. Then Use these results, and Test the uninstall to check it removes Notepad++ cleanly.

  6. Step 3, Detection: the local test filled in a registry rule: Notepad++'s entry in the installed apps list, DisplayVersion at least this version. A newer Notepad++ (it updates itself) still counts as installed.

  7. Step 4, Requirements: x64, any supported Windows 10 or 11. Leave the rest.
  8. Step 5, Listing: the name, version, publisher, description and logo came from the installer. Choose a Category such as Productivity, and switch on Show this as a featured app if you like.
  9. Step 6, Assign: set Add as to Available, type the start of a test group's name and choose Add.
  10. Step 7, Review and upload: check every value, then Upload to Intune. AppDeploy creates the app, uploads and commits the content, waits for Intune to publish it, sets the category and makes the assignment.

Open Company Portal on a test device in the group: Notepad++ appears within the hour (sync the device to hurry it along).

File, Save project keeps it. When the next Notepad++ comes out, open the project, drop in the new installer and upload: your settings come with it.
